WHY a shift in formation will make United unbeatable

Having tried and tested an array of formations during the club’s preseason tour
, it seems Jose Mourinho is sticking with a 4-2-3-1 formation, at least for now. Although Pogba slightly higher than Matic, there still exists the fact that he is expected to line up deeply while defending. Everything is working out as planned with the team playing the best football of their lives, unlocking defences with some swashbuckling footballing masterclass. It is worth noting that this traditional Mourinho formation has brought bountiful reward with ten goals scored and none conceded, a shift to 4-3-3 promises more in terms of stability with the introduction of last season’s club player of the year; enter Ander Herrera and the ever promising Luke Shaw. Ander Herrera was the go–to man last season when United were in need of balance. Time for a recall.

With the presence of Antonio Valencia, Eric Bially and Phil Jones in the back four, an introduction of close-to-match fit Luke Shaw could galvanise the defence in a way never seen before. The much needed impetus to a stable defence burning with pace, poise and much needed energy would be achieved. A full-back that could turn out to be world-class very soon is destructive on his day and a return after an injury layoff beckons, not much to talk about the ever ready stand in captain Valencia. The midfield trident of Nemanja Matic, Ander Herrera and Paul Pogba will be a handful for any team on the planet- world beaters in the making. The mover and shaker Matic offers great reading of the game as well as the required creativity of a defensive midfield role. He is slick like Carrick only better in a way.

Herrera plays best in a box to box role where he will be free to run his heart out both defending and attacking-wise, break attacks, create chances not forgetting his timely runs into the box a Matic would revel the chance of playing with a horse-like work rate of Herrera. Pogba would therefore be unshackled in a free role on the left of the midfield, free to be the creative hub of the team., it seems Jose Mourinho is sticking with a 4-2-3-1 formation, at least for now. If Mourinho is bold enough to play Martial on the left of the front three, his talent could be maximised after all. Understandably, his tactical discipline and consistency is what still baffles Mourinho but how will a player have some level of consistency if you don’t play him week in week out and have total trust in him. Surely with Shaw behind the Frenchman, he won’t have to worry about defending much. He would be free to run at defenders with a free mind. Memphis Depay benefitted well from such liberty during Van Gaal’s reign before the unfortunate horrific double-leg break. He was United’s best performer up until that point and Memphis’ United career was never the same again up from there. Such was the impact Shaw had on general play of the team. Martial would so love to play along the remarkable talent.

On the opposite flank, Mkhitaryan would be better suited. With the Armenian’s creativity, crossing and the knack of popping up at the right place and time as he did in the Europa League final. Although Mata is a great pick anytime any day. He also possesses that no.10 ability, drifting inwards to overload the central areas. He should get the nod ahead of the rest. Rashford could prove to be the wildcard at any of the places across the frontline with his relentless bursting runs, sure defenders tremble at the sight of a runner. Martial’s ability to dribble in space and in between lines though trumps the adrenaline-filled Englishman which is much required especially against deep-lying defenders and teams that play in banks. Lukaku as the apex top man has already started to show what he is capable of and it is surely a no brainer for the gaffer. With him receiving the necessary supplies from all corners of the pitch, top-scoring the division should be his main target as this could be the season he finally reaches his goal after coming short last season. The burly striker would always be a handful for defenders with his sheer power and raw pace.

There is no doubt as to who should be in goal though. Sergio Romero s a more than able deputy but De Gea is the World Class one here. He has grown in stature ever since the shaky early days in the United jersey. He plays more on holidays in goal these days with a proper back four in front of him. With such a line-up and the ability to change shape during the course of a match, United could become an unstoppable machine in Mourinho’s second season in his anointed squad.
