SPALLETTI and Blind in Strootman row
Netherlands coach Danny Blind has hit back at Luciano Spalletti in the wake of the Roma coach’s accusations that Strootman was “butchered” on international duty. Strootman was out of Napoli's game owing to a back injury sustained on National duty.
Spalletti blamed Netherlands’ medical staff for the influential midfielder’s absence, but Blind feels the Roma boss will likely just have been frustrated by his side’s inability to beat Austria Vienna. “I am offended by these comments,” Blind told De Telegraaf. “If he was unable to play due to a back injury, then why did Roma even allow him to travel to the national team after we discussed his situation with the staff and Strootman himself?
“I was in touch with him every day during our training camp to see if he was fit after such a lengthy spell on the sidelines. We even took him off against Belarus when the result was save with an eye on the game against France."
“He told me he had some back problems [after missing the game against Napoli], but he told me he would be able to play again on Thursday. I don’t know whether Spalletti was just frustrated that Roma gave away a 3-1 lead against Austria Wien or whether there’s something else, but this is a pretty strange story if you ask me. We always look after our players with the national team. These accusations are nonsense.”
Luciano Spalletti has moved to end the feud with Blind suggesting that the frustrations were more down to his side’s inability to beat the Austrians, and insisted there was clear communication with Roma during the international break.
“Danny Blind? Yeah, let’s just say he’s right. I haven’t got time to get into this anymore,” he told a media conference on Saturday. “Kevin Strootman is available, he trained well and is coming with us. We still need to consider his condition the right way.”
Roma gave away a two goal lead in Thursday's Europa League clash with late goals from Dominik Prokop and Olarenwaju Kayode snatching a point for the visitors. He expects a swift reaction against Palermo in the Serie A this weekend.
“That’s the level we need to reach – what we showed [in the 3-1 win] against Napoli,” Spalletti added.
“The anomaly was the game on Thursday night against Austria Vienna. When you’re dealing with a situation, it’s never just down to one area; what happens is a result of the approach in other areas."
“What happened hurt us, but those painful moments will never take away our desire to do something great for the side. I’m convinced that we’ll show that from tomorrow.”
