EPL wrap-up- Saturday

Arsenal 0-0 Middlesbrough

Ozil had a penalty appeal rejected after a coming together with Marten de Roon before a pair of scares for the hosts. Cech was helpless when Ramirez curled a swerving free-kick that rattled the upright, while opposite number Valdes was called upon to keep out an Alexis Sanchez set-piece. Valdes then showed some of the form that helped to establish him as Barcelona’s long-time number one – sprawling full-length to keep out a dipping low Sanchez drive. But this wave of pressure did not put Boro into survival mode, as Hector Bellerin made sprawling challenge to deny De Roon and Cech tipped wide at full stretch after Traore’s electric pace cut the Arsenal defense to ribbons before the hour. An error from the impressive Ramirez almost let Walcott open the scoring but the England man shot too close to Valdes who got down and saved well. The former Spain international remained relatively unthreatened during the closing stages, while Koscielny needed a last-ditch tackle to prevent Negredo stealing the points. Arsenal briefly thought Ozil had pilfered a victory, but their stay at the summit will be short-lived if Liverpool beat West Brom by two goals in Saturday’s late kick-off.

Liverpool 2-1 West Brom

Goals from Sadio Mane and Philippe Coutinho earned Liverpool a 2-1 success over West Brom at Anfield, although Gareth McAuley’s late consolation proved fatal to deny Jurgen Klopp’s side a place at the Premier League summit.Liverpool open the game up in the 20th minute when Mane finished off a superb sweeping move volleying home a clipped cross at the back post from Firmino. Coutinho added the second 10 minutes prior to half-time following a shanked clearance from Albion goalkeeper Ben Foster cutting inside on his right foot to fire inside Foster’s near post. Nacer Chadli had a good opprtunity to reduce the deficit but blazed over from an excellent opening for the visitors’ first attempt of the game. West Brom scored a consolation when a loose ball from a corner dropped perfectly for McAuley to fire home.

Leicester 3-1 Crystal Palace

Leicester made a positive start and could have gone ahead when Okazaki nearly made the most on an error from Palace goalkeeper Steve Mandanda after just 90 seconds, but the attacker’s chipped effort after the Frenchman’s poor attempted clearance went just wide of the target. Martin Kelly's superb inswinging cross from the left was met by Benteke who beat his marker to the ball, only to see his header hit the crossbar. Nigeria international opened the scoring in the 42nd minute when he played in Slimani and got the ball back to fire a shot past the helpless Mandanda from just outside the area for his first Premier league goal.
Ranieri’s men doubled their lead in the 63th minute when Okazaki smashed a loose ball into the net after Damien Delaney failed to adequately clear Danny Drinkwater’s cross from the left after a quick break. Kasper Schmeichel denied both Zaha and Cabaye. Fuchs then found the net with a superb long-range strike to seal the three points for Leicester. Cabaye pulled one back late on with a calm finish after being set up by Zaha, but it was too little, too late for Palace.
